Master Sgt. Paul Horton has been the target of bombs, bullets and rocket-propelled grenades. Blasts have ruptured discs in his back and neck, temporarily blinded him and damaged his brain. Shrapnel has torn through his body and almost claimed his left arm.
But his brushes with death and his heroics aren’t something the explosive ordnance disposal technician goes trumpeting. It was somebody else’s idea to have a ceremony to present him with three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart for actions during two of his four deployments since 2005.
And Horton, a member of the 775th Civil Engineer Squadron at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, repeatedly gives credit to the others who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with him on the battlefield.
His humility, though, hasn’t stopped all the attention to his 16-year career — more than 1,000 missions completed and more than 470 bombs disabled or blown up.
